After the freezing temperatures and breezy conditions in Medemblik, we have made it to Formia, Italy for the 470 European Championships. After the medal race at Delta Lloyd, we took the following day off and ventured around Amsterdam being complete tourists. We left the following morning to start the 20 hour drive to Italy, which was absolutely gorgeous. We were looking forward to the warmer temperatures and forecasted lighter air that would greet us in Formia. We spent the past two days competing in a Pre European regatta that was the 470 Italian Nationals and that was a great experience for us. It enabled us to work on some racing specific goals and proved to be good starting practice with 40 boats on the line, lots of general recalls and virtually every start being a black flag start. We actually had terrible starts the whole regatta, second row most of the time, but we’re able to battle back which was great tactical practice for us. Since we have been here it has rained every day but two and the breeze has been frontally driven. That made the racing quite interesting with some large shifts and an abandonment. We took the day off today and hiked around Gaeta, a local town near Formia. Last night, we went over to the Canadian’s house for dinner with some Australian teams and that was fun catching up with everyone. Romain gets here on June 5th and we are gearing up for four days of training before measurement on June 8th, with the regatta starting on the 10th.
